Reports out of New York indicate that the Jets might be interested in acquiring wide receiver Torry Holt, who has requested -– but not yet been granted — his release from the Rams. Not coincidentally, former Rams receivers coach Henry Ellard recently was hired for the same position with the Jets. They’re seeking to replace Laveranues Coles, who signed with the Bengals as a free agent.
Here’s what Jets beat writer Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News blogged Monday:
“Based on what I’m hearing, I’d be surprised if (they Jets) don’t pursue Holt. Yes, Holt’s age is up (33 in June) and his numbers were down (64 catches, 796 yards, three touchdowns), but he became a possession receiver last season because of the Rams’ inability to protect the passer. He might not be an elite receiver anymore, but he still has enough in the tank to draw respect from a defense. He’s a prideful professional and the change of scenery will do wonders for him.”
The Rams would prefer to trade Holt and probably wouldn’t release him until or slightly before March 17, when he is due a $1.25 million roster bonus.
All for now. . .
